[scientific]How are orgs using openstack for research?

Brenton,

In addition to Stigâ??s recommendation on the Scientific SIG,

CERN does use OpenStack extensively, including for running Kafka/Hadoop/Spark (some details at https://indico.cern.ch/event/728770/contributions/3001750/attachments/1653323/2645467/HadoopatCERN_Hepix2018spring.pdf) with all relevant changes contributed back to the open source communities.

Some other scientific use cases were covered at the recent CERN OpenStack day - Slides/Video at https://indico.cern.ch/event/776411/timetable/#20190527.detailed

Summit talks on the CERN cloud are at https://www.openstack.org/videos/search?search=cern

Hi Brenton -

This is the kind of discussion that goes on within the Scientific SIG (https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Scientific_SIG#IRC_Meetings), particularly your final question. It would be great to have you join the meetings and raise some of these topics for discussion.

The meetings alternate between EMEA and Americas timezones. Where are you based?

Cheers,

One of the answers Iâ??m seeking is whether or not some orgs create shareable configurations for software stacks that might do things like collect data into sinks like that of what amazon is attempting to offer with aws research cloud. The limitation I see with aws is that everything is built specifically with aws systems, like using S3 to store everything. For example, if your output would be better represented as a graph, it would make more sense to use a kafka-orientDB sink that can be reused. Make it a helm chart? Iâ??m not sure. I was told that CERN uses openstack for research, but I have no idea as to what extent or if they contribute anything back. Does anyone know how a research org is using the infrastructure right now?
